Sandlot Baseball and Softball Academy is pleased to announce that current major league outfielder Michael Saunders has joined the management and program development team.
Michael Saunders is a highly respected and successful player. Having him join our staff is outstanding for the Sandlot organization. Michael will be an excellent mentor to our youth and that all of our players will learn from his wealth of experience.
During Michael’s 9 years and counting as a major league baseball player, Michael has developed the teaching technique and resources that will enhance the performance of our players.
Voted an All-Star in 2016 and currently with the Baltimore Orioles, the Seattle Mariners selected Saunders in the 11th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball draft. During the 2016 season, Saunders hit three home runs for the first time in his career, and joined Joey Votto, Justin Morneau, and Larry Walker as the only Canadian players to hit three in a game and becoming the first to do it for a Canadian team. He also had eight RBIs in the game, which established another career-high. Saunders also represented Canada at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. Serving as Canada's primary right-fielder, Saunders had eight hits in 28 at-bats out of the third spot in the line-up. He scored five runs and had four RBI in seven games, while his two home runs led Canada to a 6th-place finish. Michael also represented Canada at the 2013 World Baseball Classic (WBC) and was named as one of three outfielders on the All-WBC Team, for his good offensive performance.
We are excited to have Michael expand the development we can offer our players and youth in the community.
Please join me in welcoming Michael to the Sandlot community.
